Introducing the Sun Calendar

Where's the sun at 4pm?

It's the question behind almost every pub plan we hear about, so we built a page that answers it for the whole day at once.

The Sun Calendar goes through today an hour at a time: 9am, 10am, noon, and on to the last hour with any sun left. For each hour it shows the pubs with the best sun. It changes every day, because the sun does. Today, 713 pubs are in the sun at noon. By 6pm, there are six.

Every hour, every part of London

Each hour lists its top ten, ranked on how much sun each pub gets across the whole hour rather than at a single moment. Choose North, East, South, West or Central to see your part of town. On today's calendar, the page opens on the hour you're in, marked Now.

Every hour also has a page of its own. Tap See all for the full top ten at, say, 1pm, with each pub's sun for that hour. There's a page for last light too: the last pub in the sun before it goes.

Show these on the map

Under every hour is a Show these on the map link. It opens the map with only that hour's pubs on it, framed so they all fit, named at the top ("Top 10 in London at 1pm") and set to that time. To see everything else again, tap Show all pubs.

Share an hour

Every hour page has its own link, and every link has its own preview. Send "the best pubs for sun at 1pm" to the group chat and it arrives as a card with the pubs on it, not a bare URL. The whole day has a card too (it's the one at the top of this post), and so does last light.

Plan ahead

The calendar isn't just for today. To see Saturday's sun before you've made plans, pick any day of the coming week from the date and time pill at the bottom of the page.

The rankings assume a clear sky: they show where the buildings let the sun through. Check the weather before you head out.

The clocks go back on 25 October and the afternoons get shorter. Knowing which pubs still get the sun at 4pm will matter more, and the calendar will be keeping track all winter.
